This City airport is right in the heart of Belfast, close to the docks, the Exhibition centre and the Titanic museum. Directly opposite is the famous original Shorts of Belfast factory complex, which latter became a 'Bombardier' factory but has now changed hands again to 'Spirit Aerospace'. Belfast City airport opened in 1938 and was called Sydenham Airport. It was the main airport at the time for Belfast, but war was too soon changed how it was used. During the war, it was named HMS Gadwall (also known as RNAS Belfast or RNAS Sydenham). Unlike other UK airports, it remained in RAF or RNAS service right up until 1978, carrying the name RAF Belfast. After 1978 it was then purely used by Shorts aircraft manufacturers. In 1983, it started to attract interest from airlines as a true airport again, and various routes were started up. In 2001 a new modern terminal was build and continued to expand. Today many airlines fly from Belfast City including Flybe(version2), British Airways, EasyJet, Ryanair and Aer Lingus. Ryanair, have since moved away due to the pandemic, but may return at some point.
