Airport Overview:
Exeter Airport is located in the south west of England, roughly 5 miles east of the city centre. It serves as a regional airport for this, acting as a key hub for both domestic and international holiday flights.

Airport History:
Exeter Airport opened in 1937 as a small but important regional airfield, and within a year it had a functioning terminal and flights to the Channel Islands. Civil aviation paused at the outbreak of the Second World War, when the airfield was taken over by the Air Ministry. During the war it was heavily developed, gaining hard runways, new hangars, and a variety of RAF units, including fighter squadrons that helped defend the southwest. It also hosted research groups such as the Gunnery Research Unit, which carried out weapons trials. After the war, Exeter gradually shifted back to civilian use and fully transferred to the Ministry of Civil Aviation in 1947. Throughout the 1950s and 60s, scheduled flights—especially to the Channel Islands—helped the airport grow, and local councils eventually took ownership in the early 1970s. Over the following decades, the terminal was expanded, the runway improved, and new passenger facilities were added. Management changed hands several times, leading to significant investment, including new lounges, resurfaced runways, and a long-term development plan. In recent years, Exeter Airport has modernized further under Regional & City Airports, continuing to serve as a key gateway for Devon and the wider southwest region.

Today:
In the 12 months to March 2024, Exeter Airport recorded 435,000 passengers, up 8% on the previous year. Operators include Ryanair, TUI airways, KLM, Aer Lingus, Aurigny and Blue Islands
